April 14th – Fire Alarm – Outside 132

This week I’m staying in #132. I had this room for the final week of my Technician course and on spotting the fire alarm immediately outside, I remembered the night of our graduating party.

We’d celebrated thoroughly, eating and drinking copiously and staggered back to my room in the tiny wee small hours much the worse for the demon drink.

An hour later I was woken by the klaxon squeal of this little red fucker just outside my door. Waking up drunk is a ghastly experience and not one I’d recommend to anybody.

Trying not to vomit, I fell into the closest clothes I could find, my uniform and boots, and blundered, still half asleep, out into the corridor.

There, lost and confused, stood a family of four, pyjamas and kids-in-arms. The hotel in which we train also accommodates public holiday-goers.

The father spotted me and hurried down the corridor towards me.

"Where’s the fire? Where do we go?"

Oh shit. I’m in uniform.

Oops.

Significantly wobbly and worrying that my brain is going to spew from my ears with the continuing fire alarm, I led the four of them down to the fire exit at the far end of the building and down to the marshalling point.

I’m Kal. I’m an emergency worker, a beacon of hope in times of strife.
